Gryphon hoops women downed by Windsor

WINDSOR – The Guelph Gryphons suffered their third consecutive loss and 10th setback in their last 11 OUA women’s basketball league game Saturday night as they were downed 85-70 by the Windsor Lancers.

The match completed a miserable January for the Gryphs that saw them go 1-7, all in West Division play.

Saturday, Guelph led 21-18 at the end of the first quarter, but trailed 40-32 at halftime and 69-55 at the end of the third quarter.

The Gryphs shot 39.4 per cent from the floor and 60 per cent on free throws while Windsor shot 44.6 per cent from the floor and 68.4 per cent from the line. Both teams sank six three-pointers, the Gryphs attempting 16 of them and Windsor taking 18.

Burke Bechard led Guelph with 16 points while Modupe Okeowo had 15 and Hanna Pryce netted 12. Bechard also grabbed 15 rebounds and Skyla Minaker had five assists.

Kayah Clarke collected 18 points for Windsor and Samantha Gucciardi had 17, Olivia Osamusali 15 and Tyra Blizzard 10. Eve Uwayesu had seven rebounds.

The Gryphs are to be in Sault Ste. Marie next weekend as they’re to play the Algoma Thunderbirds both Friday and Saturday at 6 p.m.
