Gryphon hoops women drop Algoma again

SAULT STE. MARIE, Ont. – The Guelph Gryphons had another strong start, building a 21-point lead in the first quarter on their way to a 78-46 victory over the Algoma Thunderbirds in OUA women’s basketball play Saturday afternoon at Algoma’s George Leach Centre.

The Gryphs also had a 21-point at the end of the first quarter in Friday night’s win over Algoma.

The Gryphs were up 29-8 at the end of the first quarter, 52-20 at halftime and 66-31 at the end of the third quarter.

Natalie Vigna struck for 18 points for the Gryphs while Mackeely Shantz and Maggie McGuire had 11 apiece. McGuire had 11 rebounds while Shantz and Alexis Wright had five assists apiece and Wright also had three assists.

The Gryphs shot 42 percent on field goals, 30 percent on three-pointers, 73 percent on free throws and had 36 points in the paint, 25 off turnovers, 16 second-chance points and 32 from their bench.

Bethany Balaktsis had 17 points for Algoma while Gracie Batongbakal had 12 and Stephanie Marin had 11. Batongbakal had six rebounds, Allison Read had four assists, Balaktsis had the game’s only block and Read had two steals.

Algoma shot 27 percent on field goals, 23 percent on three-pointers, 71 percent on free throws and had 14 points in the paint, 16 off turnovers, no second-chance points and 14 from their bench.

The win was the sixth in as many league outings for the Gryphs while the loss was eighth in eight league games for the Thunderbirds.

The Gryphs are to host the McMaster Marauders Wednesday at the Guelph Gryphons Athletics Centre. Game time is 6 p.m.

The Marauders have won four in a row and are at 5-3 for the season.
