
Gryphon hoops women drop Laurier again
WATERLOO – The Guelph Gryphons took advantage of the cold-shooting Laurier Golden Hawks to claim a 79-48 victory in OUA women’s basketball play at Laurier’s Athletic Complex gym Wednesday night.
The Gryphs held Laurier to less than 15 points in each quarter for the victory.

The Gryphs were ahead 23-14 at the end of the first quarter and they extended the lead to 44-22 by halftime. The score stood at 58-35 for Guelph at the end of the third quarter.
Natalie Vigna netted 18 points to lead Guelph while Mackeely Shantz had 15 and Renee Armstrong had 12. Armstrong hauled down eight rebounds while Shantz and Julia Colavecchia had seven apiece. Armstrong also had six assists while Colavecchia had two blocks and four steals.
No Laurier player reached double digits in scoring. Cassidy Hirtle, Miranda Campbell and Brittyn Graves each had eight points while Hirtle and Dylann Mazzuchin each had five rebounds. Emmanuelle Felix had three assists while Katrina Brady had two blocks and Campbell and Graves each had three steals.
The Gryphs shot 46 percent on field goals, 32 percent on three-pointers and 88 percent on free throws and they also had 42 points in the paint, 33 off turnovers, 15 on second chances and 20 from their bench.
The Golden Hawks shot 27 percent on field goals, 18 percent on three-pointers and 39 percent on free throws. They also had 26 points in the paint, 15 off turnovers, 12 on second chances and 25 from their bench.
Western Mustangs lead the West Division at 4-0 while the Gryphs and Waterloo Warriors are both at 3-0. Windsor Lancers are at 2-2 while Laurier’s at 1-4 and the Algoma Thunderbirds are at 0-4.
The Gryphs are to play the York Lions Saturday at 1 p.m. at the Guelph Gryphons Athletics Centre. The Lions are tied for second in the Central Division at 2-3.
