Gryphon hoops women drop preseason match
GUELPH – The Guelph Gryphons completed their OUA women’s basketball league preseason play with a 74-45 loss to the Concordia Stingers Saturday at the Guelph Gryphons Athletics Centre.
Concordia led 16-7 at the end of the first quarter, 29-18 at halftime and 48-29 at the end of the third quarter.
Burke Bechard led the Gryphs with 17 points while Skyla Minaker and Ashley White collected seven apiece and Megan Brenkel had six. Ashley Wheeler and Sarah Holmes grabbed seven rebounds apiece while Holmes and Hannah Pryce each had two blocks and Wheeler had two steals.
Caroline Task had 20 points for Concordia while Corale Dumont and Aurelie d-Anjou had 13 apiece and Ashley Moss contributed 12. Moss had 17 rebounds and three blocks while Dumont had four blocks.
The Gryphs shot just under 24 per cent on field goals and hit three of 21 three-point attempts.
Concordia shot just under 40 per cent on field goals and hit eight of 23 three-point attempts.
The game was the only preseason match on the Gryphon schedule.
The Gryphs are to start their regular season with four consecutive road games. They’re to play the McMaster Marauders at Hamilton Wednesday, Windsor Lancers at Windsor Oct. 28, Carleton Ravens at Ottawa Nov. 3 and Ottawa Gee-Gees at Ottawa Nov. 4.
The home opener against the York Lions is slated for Nov. 8.
