Gryphon hoops women drop Western for openers

GUELPH – The Guelph Gryphons established their lead early and weren’t about to give it up as they ran to a 70-40 victory over the Western Mustangs in OUA women’s basketball season-opening play Wednesday night at the Guelph Gryphons Athletics Centre.

Western’s Debora Kamba hit for the season’s opening basket 45 seconds into the match to give the Mustangs their only lead of the game. A 10-2 run by the Gryphs midway through the quarter propelled them to a 19-10 lead at the end of the opening quarter. They stretched that advantage to 37-18 at halftime and 57-28 by the end of the third quarter.

Burke Bechard led the Gryphs with 17 points while Skyla Minaker had 13 and Ivana Vujadinovic netted 10. Julia Kokonis had eight rebounds while Bechard had four assists and six steals.

Julia Curran had 10 points for Western, the only Mustang to hit double digits. She also had nine rebounds and four blocks while Kamba had four steals.

The Gryphs hit 35 per cent on field goals, 32 per cent on three pointers and 64 per cent on free throws.

The Mustangs hit 32 per cent on field goals, 44 per cent on free throws and missed all 10 three-pointers they attempted.

The Gryphs turned in a team effort as 11 players scored and all 12 had at least one rebound.
