Gryphon hoops women dropped by Queen’s

KINGSTON – The Guelph Gryphons were limited to 25 points in the second half as they were clobbered 80-49 by the Queen’s Gaels in OUA women’s basketball play Friday night at the Queen’s Athletic Recreation Complex gym.

The Gryphs shot ahead early, leading 10-3 midway through the first quarter, before the Gaels went on a 23-2 run to take control.

Skyla Minaker collected 13 points for Guelph while Burke Bechard had 10 and Ivana Vujadinovic added eight. Sarah Holmes and Bechard each grabbed seven rebounds while Miaker had two assists and Bechard four steals. Julia Kokonis had two blocks.

Marianne Alarie had 22 points for Queen’s while Myriam Fontaine netted 13 and Maddie Morris collected 10. Morris grabbed 13 rebounds while Fontaine hauled down 10. Emma Weltz had three assists and three steals and Morris had four blocks.

The Gryphs hit a single three-point shot in the game while Queen’s drained 10.

The result leaves Guelph at 3-2 and Queen’s at 3-1.

The Gryphs are to play the York Lions (2-2) at York’s Tait McKenzie Centre Saturday at 6 p.m. to wrap up their series of four consecutive road games. They’ll complete their games against East Conference teams with four consecutive home games that will also finish the 2018 portion of the schedule. They’ll start 2019 with two games at home.
