Gryphon hoops women dump Brock again

ST. CATHARINES – The Guelph Gryphons held the Brock Badgers to two points in the third quarter as the Gryphs ran to a 72-44 victory in OUA women’s basketball play Wednesday night at Brock’s Bob Davis Gymnasium.

It was Guelph’s second consecutive one-sided win over Brock as the Gryphs had won 76-44 on their own court last Friday.

While the Gryphs surrendered two points in the third quarter, they scored 23 of their own to take control of the game. Guelph led 18-15 at the end of the first quarter, 29-27 at halftime and 52-29 at the end of the third quarter.

Burke Bechard led the Gryphs with 14 points while Megan Brenkel had 11, Julia Kokonis 10 and Ivana Vujadinovic and Quincy Sickles-Jarvis eight apiece. Bechard also had 12 rebounds and five assists while Vujadinovic had eight rebounds, two assists and two steals. Ashley Wheeler had three assists while Brenkel and Haley Belyk each had three steals.

Brooke Murdoch collected 15 points, six rebounds and two assists for Brock while Baelie Campbell had 13 points, three rebounds and three assists, Courtney Mcpherson had seven points, eight rebounds and a steal and Guelph native Lauren Zonneveld had three points, two rebounds, an assist and two steals.

The Gryphs shot 43 per cent in the game, including 17 per cent on three-pointers, 67 per cent on free throws and they had 43 rebounds and 14 steals. Brock shot 27 per cent, 31 per cent on three-pointers, 68 per cent of free throws and had 31 rebounds and five steals.

With the win the Gryphs move into a three-way tie for fourth place in the West Division with an 8-9 record. The Western Mustangs are at 8-8 and the Laurier Golden Hawks are also at 8-9. Brock is seventh at 5-12.

The Gryphs are to host the division-leading McMaster Marauders (13-4) Saturday at 1 p.m. at the Guelph Gryphons Athletics Centre.
