Gryphon hoops women edged by Western

LONDON – The Guelph Gryphons ran out of gas during their fourth-quarter comeback attempt as they dropped a 70-66 decision to the Western Mustangs in OUA women’s basketball play Saturday night at Western’s Alumni Hall.

Western led 16-10 at the end of the first quarter, 35-28 at halftime and 57-42 at the completion of the third quarter. The hosts extended the lead by hitting a pair of free throws in the opening minute of the fourth quarter.

However, the Gryphs went on a 22-5 run to pull even with 3:35 to go, but their only scoring after that was a pair of free throws with eight seconds to go. Western regained the lead 22 seconds after the Gryphs had tied it and didn’t let it slip away.

Modupe Okeowo led the Gryphs with 26 points while Burke Bechard had 16 and Skyla Minaker added 12. Okeowo also grabbed 10 rebounds and had four steals while Minaker had four assists.

Laura Graham had 23 points for Western with 16 going to Brett Fischer and 14 to Emma Johnson. Fischer hauled down nine rebounds while Jade Codinera had four assists and Johnson had two steals.

The result leaves both teams tied for sixth in the West Division at 5-11. They trail the Laurier Golden Hawks (6-10) and lead the deadlocked duo of Algoma Thunderbirds and Waterloo Warriors who are both at 4-12.

The game was the first of four consecutive road games for the Gryphs They’re to play Laurier at Laurier’s Athletic Complex gym Wednesday at 1 p.m.
