Gryphon hoops women explode into 2020 portion of schedule

OSHAWA – The Guelph Gryphons burst out of the blocks to start the 2020 portion of their OUA women’s basketball play Wednesday night.

The Gryphs connected for 37 points in the first quarter as they dropped the winless Ontario Tech Ridgebacks 82-53 at Ontario Tech’s Campus Recreation and Wellness Centre.

Guelph was ahead 37-14 at the end of the first quarter and 58-24 at halftime. They extended the lead to 71-34 by the end of the third quarter.

The Gryphs took 24 shots from the floor in the first quarter and sank two-thirds of them. MacKeely Shantz collected 11 or her game-high 21 points in the opening quarter. Skyla Minaker finished with 15 points while Burke Bechard and Hanna Pryce each had eight. Shantz also had 16 rebounds five assists and two steals while Minaker had seven assists and four steals and Natalie Vigna also had five assists.

Vanessa Budimunda had 13 points for Ontario Tech while Katherine Onunkwo had 11. Onunkwo also had nine rebounds while Alyssa Carin had four assists.

While the Gryphs had to be happy about their offensive output, they were likely more pleased with their ball control as they limited their turnovers in the game to eight.

The Gryphs are third in the West Division at 6-5 while Ontario Tech is sixth in the East at 0-12.

The Gryphs are to play the Waterloo Warriors (fifth in the West at 3-9) at Waterloo’s Physical Activities Complex Saturday at 1 p.m.
