Gryphon hoops women fade away in loss to Ottawa

GUELPH – The Guelph Gryphons faded in the second half as they were downed 86-69 by the Ottawa Gee-Gees in OUA women’s basketball play Friday night at the Guelph Gryphons Athletics Centre.

The Gryphs had trailed by a single point at halftime, but were limited to nine in the third quarter while the fourth-ranked Gee-Gees netted 26.

Ottawa led 20-17 at the end of the first quarter, 41-40 at halftime and 67-49 at the end of the third quarter.

Sarah Holmes led the Gryphs with 20 points while Burke Bechard had 15 and Modupe Okeowo collected 10.

Each of Ottawa’s starters hit double figures with Sarah Besselink at 29, Brooklynn McAlear-Fanus at 12, Angela Ribarich at 11 and Amelie Hachey and Brigitte Lefebvre-Okankwu at 10 apiece.

The Gryphs drop to 4-5 with the loss while Ottawa improves to 8-1.

The Gryphs are to complete the 2018 portion of their schedule Sunday with a 1 p.m. game at the GGAC against the seventh-ranked Carleton Ravens (7-2).
