Gryphon hoops women fall to Brock Badgers
ST. CATHARINES – The Guelph Gryphons surrendered 30 points in the third quarter as they suffered their second consecutive loss in OUA women’s basketball play.
The Gryphs were downed 78-52 by the West Division-leading Brock Badgers at Brock’s Bob Davis Gymnasium.

Brock led 12-11 at the end of the first quarter, 31-24 at halftime and 61-37 at the end of the third quarter.
Skyla Minaker and Reece Mungar netted 11 points apiece for the Gryphs while MacKeely Shantz had seven. Shantz grabbed 13 rebounds while Minaker had two steals.
Sam Keltos led Brock with 17 points while Victoria Lawrence had 14, Ivana Twumasi 11 and Madalyn Weinert 10. Keltos pulled down 11 rebounds while Mackenzie Robinson had nine rebounds and five assists. Keltos had two blocks and three steals while Kaley DeMont had four steals.
The Gryphs shot 25 percent from the field, 14 percent on three-pointers and 63 percent on free throws. They also scored 16 points in the paint, four on turnovers, nine on second chances and 14 from their bench.
Brock shot 40 percent on field goals, 29 percent on three-pointers and 60 percent on free throws. The Badgers collected 46 points in the paint, 15 off turnovers, 10 on second chances and 30 from their bench.
While the lead changed hands four times, the last time the Gryphs were ahead was with 24 seconds to go in the opening quarter when they were up 11-10.
Brock leads the division at 6-0 while the Gryphs are fourth at 3-2. McMaster Marauders are second at 5-1 while the Western Mustangs are unbeaten in third at 4-0. Following the Gryphs are the Windsor Lancers at 2-4, Waterloo Warriors at 1-3, Laurier Golden Hawks at 1-4, Lakehead Thunderwolves at 1-5 and Algoma Thunderbirds at 0-4.
The Gryphs are to complete the 2021 portion of their regular season with a home game against the Badgers Saturday at the Guelph Gryphons Athletics Centre. Game time is 1 p.m.
