Gryphon hoops women get their home playoff game

SAULT STE. MARIE – The Guelph Gryphons earned a home game in the first round of the OUA women’s basketball league playoffs with a 71-58 victory over the Algoma Thunderbirds on the final day of the league’s regular season.

The win left the Gryphs third in the West Division at 14-8 and in a tie for eighth overall with the McMaster Marauders. The Gryphs win the tie-breaker thanks to a 92-60 victory over the Marauders at McMaster Nov. 9 in their only meeting of the regular season.

Saturday, the Gryphs had to rally from behind for the win. After a slow start they trailed 25-13 at the end of the first quarter, but yielded 11 points to the Thunderbirds in each of the final three quarters for the win. The teams were tied 36-36 at halftime and Guelph led 58-47 at the end of the fourth quarter.

Burke Bechard led the Gryphs with 16 points while Modupe Okeowo had 15 and MacKeely Shantz netted 12. Bechard also had eight rebounds while Skyla Minaker had six assists and four steals.

Karly Fracalanza had 16 points for Algoma while Dionne Martin added 14 and Ayaka Nakashima collected 10. Fracalanza and Rebecca Wylie each had six rebounds while Nakashima had six assists and Martin had three blocks.

Western Mustangs (19-3), Ryerson Rams (18-4), Ottawa Gee-Gees (18-4) and Brock Badgers (17-5) get byes in the first round of the playoffs. The byes were awarded to the three teams that finished first in their division and the second-place team (Brock) with the best record. The Badgers won a tie-breaker with the Windsor Lancers (17-5) to get the first-round bye.

Teams that are to play in the opening round are Windsor, Carleton Ravens (15-7), Queen’s Gaels (15-7), Gryphs, McMaster, York Lions (11-11), Laurier Golden Hawks (10-12) and Lakehead Thunderwolves (8-14).

The first-round games are to be held Wednesday. The Gryphs are to host McMaster at 7 p.m. at the Guelph Gryphons Athletic Centre.

The other first-round games have Laurier playing at Queen’s, Lakehead playing at Windsor and York playing at Carleton.

If the Gryphs win Wednesday’s game, they’ll play the Brock Badgers at St. Catharines next Saturday at 7:30 p.m. in the quarter-finals.
