Gryphon hoops women go cold in loss to Windsor
WINDSOR – The Guelph Gryphons started hot, but cooled off as they suffered a 73-61 loss to the Windsor Lancers in OUA women’s basketball play Wednesday at Windsor’s St. Denis Centre.
The Gryphs were up 10-2 three minutes into the game, but were limited to six points the remainder of the quarter. Windsor led 18-16 at the end of the opening quarter, 36-26 at halftime and 56-48 after the third quarter.
Guelph never threatened in the fourth quarter, a quarter in which they missed all 11 three-point shots they took, six of 10 jumpers, five of seven layups and three of four free throws.
Skyla Minaker led the Gryphs with 13 points while Burke Bechard had 12 and Ivana Vujadinovic added eight. Ashley Wheeler had nine rebounds and Guelph’s lone block while Minaker had four assists and four steals.
Kayah Clarke connected for 22 points for Windsor while Samantha Gucciardi and Harriet Carey each had nine. Eve Uwayesu had eight rebounds, five assists and three steals.
Windsor remains in a tie with the Western Mustangs for first in the West Division with 10-1 records. The Gryphs are fourth at 5-4.
The Gryphs are to wrap up the 2019 portion of their season Saturday by hosting Western at the Guelph Gryphons Athletic Centre. Game time is 1 p.m.
