Gryphon hoops women grab win from Laurier

GUELPH – Burke Bechard hit a jumper with 29 seconds to go to lift the Guelph Gryphons to a 60-59 victory over the Laurier Golden Hawks in OUA women’s basketball play Saturday at the Guelph Gryphons Athletics Centre.

The game was the final one of the regular season for both teams and the result left them tied for fifth in the West Division with 9-15 records. Despite the win, the Gryphs lose the tie-breaker to Laurier thanks to a 78-69 victory at Laurier Jan. 23.

Saturday’s game was close throughout, neither team getting ahead by more than seven points. Laurier led 18-17 at the end of the first quarter, 35-32 at halftime and 49-45 at the end of the third quarter.

Skyla Minaker and Bechard each had 11 points for the Gryphs while Sarah Holmes had 10. Holmes had eight rebounds and Minaker had seven assists and eight steals.

Brianna Iannazzo led Laurier with 19 points while Hunter Johns had 11 and Jill Condron picked up 10. Celina Elliott had nine rebounds while Rachel Woodburn had seven assists and two steals.

For the Gryphs, Bechard finished the regular season with 15.8 points per game, good for a tie for fourth in the league, and she was third in rebounding with 8.5 per game. Minaker was second with 3.1 steals per game.

The playoff qualifiers in the West Division are the McMaster Marauders (21-3), Lakehead Thunderwolves (20-4), Windsor Lancers (17-7), Brock Badgers (11-13) and Laurier and Guelph.

The Gryphs are to play the Lancers at Windsor in a West Division quarter-final Wednesday. Game time is 6 p.m.

Guelph and Windsor split their regular-season games this season, both winning at home. The Lancers won 85-70 at Windsor Jan. 26 and the Gryphs won 79-74 at the GGAC Feb. 8.
