Gryphon hoops women hang on to top Brock

ST. CATHARINES – The Guelph Gryphons held off a fourth-quarter comeback attempt by the Brock Badgers to record a 70-65 victory in OUA women’s basketball play Saturday at Brock’s Bob Davis Gymnasium.

The Gryphs led by nine points in the opening minute of the final quarter, but Brock closed the gap to two points with 78 seconds to play. However, the Gryphs added three points during the final 54 seconds – a layup by Renee Armstrong and a free throw by Julia Colavecchia — to secure the win.

Brock led 19-17 at the end of the first quarter before the Gryphs shot ahead 42-38 by the end of the opening half. Guelph was up 56-50 at the end of the third quarter.

MacKeely Shantz hit for 24 points for the Gryphs while Colavecchia had 13 and Armstrong and Trinity Papamandjaris each had eight. Shantz had eight rebounds, five assists, three blocks and two steals. Lucy Tesseyman had seven rebounds, four assists, four blocks and three steals. Armstrong also had three steals while Papamandjaris had three blocks.

Madalyn Weinert had 26 points for Brock while Allison Addy added 13 and Olivia Fiorucci had 10. Weinert had 12 rebounds and six assists while Princess Gayle had five blocks and Fiorucci had four steals.

The Gryphs shot 37 percent on field goals, 25 percent on three-pointers and 64 percent on free throws. They also collected 28 points in the paint, 16 off turnovers, 13 on second chances and 15 from their bench.

The Badgers shot 35 percent on field goals, 39 percent on three-pointers and 53 percent on free throws. They also collected 22 points in the paint, 11 off turnovers, five on second chances and 14 from their bench.

The Gryphs are second in the West Division and sixth overall at 13-5 while Brock is third in the Central Division and tied for eighth overall at 10-8. Top 12 overall qualify for the playoffs.

The Gryphs have four games left in their regular season including three in a row at the Guelph Gryphons Athletic Centre. They’re to host the Ontario Tech Ridgebacks (16th overall at 3-15) Friday at 6 p.m., the Windsor Lancers (tied for 10th overall at 8-9) in their Senior Night game Saturday at 6 p.m. and the Western Mustangs (tied for eighth overall at 10-8) Feb. 15 in their combined Shoot for the Cure game and She’s Got Game game at 6 p.m. They’re to complete their regular season against the Lancers at Windsor Feb. 18 at 4 p.m.
