
Gryphon hoops women head into break with perfect mark
LONDON – The Guelph Gryphons remained undefeated as they completed the first semester with a 63-54 victory over the Western Mustangs at Western’s Alumni Hall Saturday.
The Gryphs have won all eight league games they’ve played this season and are ranked sixth in the country.

Regina Cougars are 7-1 and ranked No. 1 in the country while the top OUA teams are Queen’s Gaels at 10-0 and ranked third and Ottawa Gee-Gees 9-0 and ranked fifth.
Saturday, the Gryphs never trailed as they scored the first 10 points of the game and led 21-12 at the end of the first quarter. They were up 31-27 at halftime and 42-37 after the third quarter.
MacKeely Shantz led the Gryphs with 19 points while Marielle Kleuskens had 12 and Renee Armstrong and Julia Colavecchia each had eight. Shantz and Armstrong grabbed 12 rebounds apiece while Armstrong also had five assists. Kleuskens had two blocks and Colcavecchia had four steals.
The Mustangs used seven players in the game while the Gryphs used 11.
Ariane Saumure led Western with 25 points, 12 rebounds, three assists and four steals. Brett Fischer had 15 points and Morgan Tamminga had two blocks.
The Gryphs shot 38 percent on field goals, 19 percent on three-pointers and 44 (8 of 18) on free throws. They also had 32 points in the paint, 19 off turnovers, 11 on second chances and 12 from their bench.
Western shot 27 percent on field goals, 19 percent (5 of 27) on three-pointers and 77 percent on free throws. The Mustangs also had 20 points in the paint, 14 off turnovers, three on second chances and six from their bench.
The Gryphs are to start the second semester with a pair of games against Toronto opponents. They’re to play the Toronto Metropolitan Bold at TMU’s Mattamy Athletic Centre Jan. 4 at 6 p.m. before hosting the Toronto Varsity Blues Jan. 7 at 1 p.m. at the Guelph Gryphons Athletics Centre.
The Gryphs lead the West Division at 8-0 while the Waterloo Warriors are second at 7-1. Western’s third at 7-3 while the Windsor Lancers are fourth at 4-5, Laurier Golden Hawks are fifth at 4-6 and Algoma Thunderbirds are sixth at 0-10.
TMU is third in the Central Division at 4-5 while Toronto is fifth at 3-7.
