Gryphon hoops women net third straight win

WATERLOO – A big second quarter paced the Guelph Gryphons to a 74-55 win over the Waterloo Warriors Friday night at the University of Waterloo’s Physical Activities Complex.

The Gryphs outscored their hosts by 12 points in the second quarter to turn a 19-15 lead at the end of the first quarter into a 45-29 advantage at halftime. Guelph led 62-45 at the end of the third quarter.

Guelph scored the first four points of the match and never trailed in the game.

Sarah Holmes led the Gryphs with 17 points while Ashley Wheeler had 14 and Megan Benkel added 10. Haley Belyk and Skyla Minaker each had seven. Holmes hauled down 13 rebounds while Ivana Vujadinovic and Wheeler had five apiece. Belyk had six assists, Minaker two steals and Vujadinovic three blocks.

Ann Stewart led Waterloo with 11 points while Guelph CVI grad Sydney Wilson and Julia Pavlik each had 10 and Hilary Ferguson netted eight. Aphia Ward had eight rebounds.

The win was the third in a row for the Gryphs and it moved them to fifth in the West Division at 11-10. Top six qualify for the playoffs. Waterloo is tied for eighth at 2-20.

The Gryphs have three games left in their regular season as they’re to play the Laurier Golden Hawks at Waterloo’s Manulife Sportsplex at RIM Park Sunday at 12 noon. The Golden Hawks are sixth in the West at 10-11.

Guelph is to complete its regular season with a pair of home games next week as they’re to host Waterloo Wednesday at 6 p.m. at the Guelph Gryphons Athletic Centre and fourth-place Western Mustangs (12-9) Saturday at 1 p.m. at the GGAC.
