Gryphon hoops women nipped by Lakehead

GUELPH – The Guelph Gryphons were held to six points in the third quarter as they fell 67-66 to the Lakehead Thunderwolves in OUA women’s basketball play Friday night at the Guelph Gryphons Athletics Centre.

The Gryphs were eyeing a victory over the Thunderwolves when they went ahead by five points just a little over two minutes into the second half. However, Lakehead wasn’t about to roll over and give in as the Thunderwolves went on a 17-2 run through the rest of the quarter to lead by 10 at the start of the final quarter.

Guelph had led 21-20 at the end of the first quarter and 40-39 at halftime before Lakehead claimed a 56-46 lead at the end of the third.

The Thunderwolves got ahead by as much as 14 points, but the Gryphs didn’t give up. They clawed back to have a shot at winning, Burke Bechard’s layup with 18 seconds to go leaving the gap at the final single-point difference.

Bechard led the Gryphs with a game-high 20 points while Hanna Pryce had 16 and Modupe Okeowo netted 11.

Bechard also grabbed 11 rebounds and had a block. Skyla Minaker had six steals.

Leashja Grant hit for 15 points for Lakehead, Nikki Ylagan added 12 and Tiffany Reynolds and Karissa Kajorinne contributed 11 apiece.
