Gryphon hoops women nipped by Lions

TORONTO – Cyanna King hit a pair of free throws with 34 seconds to go to give the York Lions a 77-76 victory over the Guelph Gryphons in OUA women’s basketball play Saturday night at York’s Tait McKenzie Centre.

The teams battled evenly throughout the final quarter after the Gryphs battled back from a six-point deficit (61-55) at the beginning of the quarter. They had trailed by as much as 11 points in the third quarter, but Sarah Holmes hit a free throw with 4:50 to go to tie the game 66-65. Two successful free throws by Ivana Vujadinovic and a jumper by Burke Bechard put the Gryphs up by four 10 seconds later, but they couldn’t hold on.

Guelph led 19-13 at the end of the first quarter and 37-35 at halftime.

Bechard led the Gryphs with 21 points while Holmes had 20 and they also hauled down seven rebounds apiece. Bechard also had three assists and seven steals.

Katrina Collins-Samuels had 18 points, nine rebounds, four assists and five steals for York while Lauren Golding and King each had 14 points, Emma Jonas had 11 and Madison Bardoel had 10. Golding and King each also had nine rebounds, Megan MacLeod had four assists and King had two blocks.

The Gryphs shot 41 per cent from the floor, 63 per cent from beyond the arc and 58 per cent from the line. York shot 45 per cent from the floor, 38 per cent on three-pointers and 66 per cent on free throws.

The loss was the second of the weekend for the Gryphs and leaves them at 3-3. York improves to 3-2.

Next up for the Gryphs is a game against the Nipissing Lakers (0-4) Friday at 6 p.m. at the Guelph Gryphons Athletics Centre, the first of six consecutive home games.
