Gryphon hoops women ousted from playoffs

THUNDER BAY – A comeback attempt by the Guelph Gryphons stalled in the fourth quarter as they suffered a 79-71 loss to the Lakehead Thunderwolves in the OUA women’s basketball league’s West Division semifinals to be ousted from the playoffs.

The Gryphs led only once in the game when Skyla Minaker hit a three-pointer midway through the first quarter to put Guelph ahead 12-10.

Lakehead regained the lead shortly thereafter and built it to a maximum of 12 points when Nikki Ylagan hit a three-pointer three and a half minutes into the second quarter.

However, the Gryphs didn’t roll over as they started to chip away at the gap. They got it down to two with just under three and a half minutes to play in the fourth quarter when Burke Bechard dropped in a layup. That, though, was as close as they were able to get and the Thunderwolves added to their lead by sinking three free throws in the final 30 seconds when the Gryphs were forced to foul in an attempt to get the ball back.

Lakehead led 20-14 at the end of the first quarter, 39-32 at halftime and 58-50 at the end of the third quarter.

Modupe Okeowo hit for 19 points and six rebounds for the Gryphs while Bechard had 14 points, 11 rebounds, six assists and five steals and Minaker had 13 points, six rebounds, four assists and three steals.

Leashja Grant collected 24 points, nine rebounds and five steals for Lakehead while Karissa Kajorinne had 20 points and Tiffany Reynolds had 14 points, eight rebounds and eight assists.

Lakehead advances to Wednesday’s OUA semifinals and they’re to play the Ottawa Gee-Gees at Ottawa while the McMaster Marauders are to host the Carleton Ravens.

Ottawa defeated the York Lions 89-53 Saturday while McMaster downed the Brock Badgers 81-70 and Carleton thumped the Ryerson Rams 74-49.

Wednesday’s winners are to meet in the Critelli Cup championship game next Saturday.
