Gryphon hoops women rally to top Brock

ST. CATHARINES – The Guelph Gryphons rallied in the fourth quarter to top the Brock Badgers 70-63 in OUA women’s basketball play Brock’s Bob Davis Gymnasium Saturday night.

The Gryphs led 25-14 at the end of the first half and 35-31 at halftime before Brock battled back to shoot ahead 47-46 by the end of the third quarter.

However, Burke Bechard’s basket on a jumper with 12 seconds to go in the third quarter were the first two of eight consecutive points that put Guelph ahead for good.

The Badgers did get the gap down to a single point with 1:13 to play before Guelph hit for the final six points of the game.

Sarah Holmes led the Gryphs with 17 points while Burke Bechard had 16 and Ivana Vujadinovic and Skyla Minaker had 10 apiece.

Bechard also grabbed 14 rebounds and had four steals while Minaker also had four steals and Julia Kokonis had two blocks.

Melissa Tatti had a game-high 24 points for Brock while Miranda Smith added 10. Tatti and Meagan Charbonneau each had six rebounds while Tatti also had four assists and nine steals.

The result leaves the Gryphs at 2-0 and Brock at 0-2.

The game was the first of five consecutive road games for the Gryphs. They’re to play the Ryerson Rams (1-0) at the Mattamy Athletic Centre Wednesday at 6 p.m.
