Gryphon hoops women run away with preseason opener
GUELPH – The Guelph Gryphons opened their 2019-20 women’s basketball season with a 104-81 preseason victory over the Memorial Sea-Hawks of Newfoundland and Labrador Sunday at the Guelph Gryphons Athletics Centre.
The Gryphs jumped ahead early and never trailed as they scored the first 12 points of the match on their way to a 31-18 lead at the end of the first quarter. They were up 58-37 at halftime and 79-59 after the third quarter.
Hanna Pryce led the Gryphs with 23 points while MacKeely Shantz had 21, Ivana Vujadinovic 18, Burke Bechard 15 and Reece Mungar 11. Bechard grabbed 11 rebounds and Shantz had 10 while Mungar had six assists and Shantz had four steals.
Haille Nickerson led Memorial with a game-high 25 points while Alana Short added 18 and Kelli Linehan netted 10. Nickerson and Hannah Green each hauled down seven rebounds and Cameron Longley had two steals.
While the game was Guelph’s first of the season, it was the fourth for the Sea-Hawks who finish their preseason at 2-2. They’re to start their Atlantic conference regular season Nov. 2.
The locals have three more preseason games on their schedule, all at home against U.S. opponents. They’re to play the St. John Fisher College Cardinals of Rochester, N.Y., Saturday at 6 p.m., Trine University Thunder of Angola, Ind., Sunday at 1 p.m. and Viterbo University V-Hawks of La Crosse, Wis., Oct. 19 at 5 p.m.
St. John Fisher and Trine are NCAA Division III schools while Viterbo is an NAIA school.
The Gryphs are to begin their OUA regular season Nov. 1 with an 11 a.m. game against the Queen’s Gaels at Kingston. Home opener is Nov. 2 at 6 p.m. against the York Lions.
The Gryphs are also to play an exhibition game against the Notre Dame Fighting Irish – yes, that Notre Dame Fighting Irish – on Dec. 21 at South Bend, Ind.
