Gryphon hoops women slip by third-place Windsor

GUELPH – The Guelph Gryphons hung tough to edge the Windsor Lancers 79-74 in OUA women’s basketball league play Friday night at the Guelph Gryphons Athletics Centre.

The Gryphs trailed 18-17 at the end of the first quarter, but rallied to shoot ahead 40-38 by halftime. The game remained close with Guelph up 62-60 at the end of the third quarter.

The hosts might have won the match on the free-throw line as they hit 15 foul shots, 10 more than Windsor. That helped offset Windsor’s 50 percent accuracy from the floor compared to 35.4 for the Gryphs.

Modupe Okeowo led the Gryphs with 21 points while Sarah Holmes had 19 and Burke Bechard added 16. Bechard also grabbed nine rebounds while Holmes and Julia Kokonis each had seven. Skyla Minaker had seven assists and four steals.

Carly Steer netted 20 points for Windsor with Kayah Clarke getting 13 and Eve Uwayesu getting 10. Olivia Osamusali had 10 rebounds while Kaylee Anagnostolpoulos had four assists and two steals.

The Gryphs are sixth in the West Division at 7-14 while Windsor is third at 14-7.

Guelph is to host seventh-place Waterloo Warriors (5-16) Saturday at 6 p.m.
