Gryphon hoops women slow off mark in loss to Western
LONDON – A slow start was costly for the Guelph Gryphons as they fell too far behind to recover in a 71-61 loss to the Western Mustangs in OUA women’s basketball league play Wednesday at Western’s Alumni Hall.
Western had a nine-point lead three minutes into the game and led 23-9 at the end of the opening quarter. The Mustangs were up 35-23 at halftime and ran to a 57-36 lead by the completion of the third quarter.
Skyla Minaker connected for 15 points for the Gryphs while Burke Bechard had 12 and Ivana Vujadinovic added 11. Minaker had nine rebounds and three steals while MacKeely Shantz had five assists.
Maddy Horst led Western with 19 points while Julia Curran followed with 14. Curran also had nine rebounds while Elizabeth Leblanc had five assists and three steals.
The loss drops Guelph to 9-6 while Western improves to 15-2.
