
Gryphon hoops women start in hurry to win opener
THUNDER BAY – The Guelph Gryphons used a fast start to leave the Lakehead Thunderwolves behind in their OUA women’s basketball league regular season opener Friday night at Lakehead’s C.J. Sanders Fieldhouse.
The Gryphs grabbed a 16-point lead by the end of the first quarter and built on it in each of the following three quarters to record a 73-42 victory.

The Gryphs scored the first nine points of the game and led 23-7 at the end of the first quarter. They stretched the lead to 42-21 at halftime and 61-33 at the end of the third quarter.
Guelph hit exactly half of their field-goal shots in the first quarter (nine of 18) including half of their three-pointers (three of six) to grab the early lead.
For the game the Gryphs shot 36 percent on field goals, 30 percent on three-pointers and 88 percent on free throws (they missed one). They also collected 40 points in the paint, 20 off turnovers, 21 on second chances and 19 from their bench.
The Thunderwolves shot 28 percent on field goals, 20 percent on three-pointers and 67 percent on free throws and also had 16 points in the paint, 11 off turnovers, seven on second chances and 12 from their bench.
Mackeely Shantz struck for 21 points, 13 rebounds and five assists for the Gryphs while Julia Colavecchia had 10 points and Renee Armstrong added nine points, nine rebounds, four assists, three blocks and four steals.
Tiffany Reynolds had 16 points, eight rebounds, five assists and three steals for Lakehead while Lily Gruber-Schulz had nine points and six rebounds.
Next up for the Gryphs is their home opener against the Laurier Golden Hawks Nov. 11 at 6 p.m.
Laurier suffered a 70-53 loss to the Western Mustangs at home Friday night.
