Gryphon hoops women suffer first loss of season

TORONTO – The Guelph Gryphons suffered their first loss of the OUA women’s basketball season Wednesday when they were downed 88-56 by the Toronto Metropolitan Bold, formerly Ryerson Rams.

The Gryphs never led in the game.

The Bold led 21-10 at the end of the first quarter, 42-25 at halftime and 70-44 after the third quarter.

The Gryphs were without Natalie Vigna who suffered a knee injury midway through the win over the Western Mustangs at Western Dec. 3. She averaged 16.1 points a game in the eight wins in the 2022 portion of the schedule.

The Guelph side was stone cold with its shooting against TMU as the Gryphs shot 29 percent (22 of 77) on field goals, 14 percent (3 of 22) on three pointers and 53 percent (9 of 17) on free throws.

The Gryphs also scored 28 points in the paint, eight off turnovers, 13 on second chances and received 14 from their bench.

By comparison, TMU shot 48 percent (29 of 60) on field goals, 50 percent (14 of 28) on three pointers and 84 percent (16 of 19) on free throws. The Bold also scored 24 points in the paint, 12 off turnovers and seven on second chances. Their bench added 13 points.

Julia Colavecchia had 12 points to lead the Gryphs in scoring while Lucy Tesseyman had 11 and MacKeeley Shantz netted nine. Renee Armstrong had 10 rebounds and three assists while Colavecchia had three assists and three steals and Tesseyman had four blocks.

Rachel Farwell led TMU with 32 points while Jayme Foreman collected 19 and Haley Fedick added 10. Fedick had eight rebounds while Kaillie Hall had nine assists and Farwell, Eleanor Jones and Lauryn Meek each had two blocks. Sarai Bailey had two steals.

The Gryphs lead the West Division at 8-1 and are followed by the Waterloo Warriors at 7-1, Western at 7-3, Windsor Lancers at 4-5, Laurier Golden Hawks at 4-6 and Algoma Thunderbirds at 0-10. TMU is third in the Central Division at 5-5.

The Gryphs are to host the Toronto Varsity Blues, fifth in the Central Division at 3-8, Saturday at 1 p.m. at the Guelph Gryphons Athletics Centre.
