Gryphon hoops women toppled by Laurier

WATERLOO – The Guelph Gryphons fell just a little too far behind with an eight-point second quarter to recover in OUA women’s basketball play against the Laurier Golden Hawks Wednesday at at the Wilfrid Laurier Athletic Complex.

Laurier had a 14-point lead on the way to a 78-69 victory.

The Gryphs outscored Laurier in each of the final two quarters and managed to get the gap down to three points with 51 seconds to play. However, they were forced to foul to try to regain possession of the ball and Laurier shooters were almost perfect the rest of the way, hitting seven of eight free throws.

Gryphon shooters weren’t that great from the line. They missed the only two free throws they had in the first half when the Golden Hawks hit 11 of 14. The Gryphs sank 13 of 19 in the second half while Laurier hit 16 of 20.

Burke Bechard led all scorers with 20 points for the Gryphs while Sarah Holmes had 11 and Modupe Okeowo added 10. Bechard also hauled down 14 rebounds while Skyla Minaker had two assists and Holmes had three steals.

Brianna Iannazzo and Jill Condron each had 19 points for Laurier while Rachel Woodburn had 15. Condron and Woodburn each latched on to seven rebounds while Maya Day and Woodburn had four assists apiece and Woodburn also had three steals. Tayania Siwek-Smith had five blocks.

The loss keeps the Gryphs tied for sixth in the West Division with the Western Mustangs. Western has a game in hand at 5-11 while the Gryphs are at 5-12. Algoma Thunderbirds and Waterloo Warriors are close behind with 4-12 records while Laurier improves to 7-10.

The Gryphs are to play the Windsor Lancers (11-6) at Windsor’s St. Denis Centre Saturday at 6 p.m.
