Gryphon hoops women win opener on road

WINDSOR – The Guelph Gryphons opened their OUA women’s basketball season with an 85-58 victory over the Windsor Lancers Wednesday at Windsor’s Dennis Fairall Fieldhouse.

It’s the third consecutive season the Gryphs have opened with a victory.

The Gryphs got off to a slow start as Windsor scored the first six points of the match, but Guelph rebounded to lead 23-18 at the end of the first quarter. They stretched the lead to 42-33 at halftime and 64-48 at the end of the third quarter.

MacKeely Shantz struck for a game-high 21 points, six rebounds and four steals for the Gryphs while Burke Bechard had 17 points, nine rebounds and three steals. Julia Colavecchia netted 11 points and Trinity Papamandjaris had nine.

Mariame Dehkissia has 12 points and three steals for Windsor while Harriet Carey collected 10 points and seven rebounds and Reighan Dales had nine points and six rebounds.

The Gryphs shot 42 percent on field goals, 45 percent on three-pointers and 60 percent on free throws while Windsor shot 34 percent on field goals, 32 percent on three-pointers and 41 percent on free throws.

The Gryphs also scored 31 points off turnovers and got 43 points from their bench.

Windsor had nine points off turnovers and 25 from their bench.

The teams are to play again Saturday at the Guelph Gryphons Athletics Centre starting at 2 p.m.
