Gryphon hoops women’s losing streak hits six games

WATERLOO – The Guelph Gryphons suffered their sixth consecutive loss in OUA women’s basketball league play Wednesday when they were edged 68-64 in overtime by the Waterloo Warriors at Waterloo’s Physical Activities Centre.

The Gryphs led by four points starting the fourth quarter and by three with 35 seconds to go in regulation time, but a three-pointer by Waterloo’s Aphia Ward with 20 seconds to play tied the game and forced the overtime, although the Gryphs couldn’t get a shot at the buzzer to drop.

Guelph never led in the extra five-minute period as Waterloo grabbed the lead four seconds into the period and never let it go.

The Warriors led 21-19 at the end of the first quarter and the teams were tied 33-33 at halftime. Guelph led 51-47 at the end of the third quarter.

Skyla Minaker led the Gryphs, who used three substitutes in the game, with 17 points while Ivana Vujadinovic had 16 and Modupe Okeowo added 14. Okeowo grabbed 11 rebounds and Burke Bechard had four assists.

Kaitlyn Overeem had a game-high 22 points for Waterloo and Ward finished with 19. Vanessa Hughes and Mackenzie Obermayer each had seven rebounds and Overeem had seven assists and seven steals.

The result leaves the Gryphs and Waterloo with identical 4-9 records. The Algoma Thunderbirds are at 4-8 and the Laurier Golden Hawks are at 4-9.

The Lakehead Thunderwolves lead the West Division at 11-1 while the McMaster Marauders are second at 10-2.

The Gryphs are to host McMaster Friday at 6 p.m. at the Guelph Gryphons Athletics Centre. The hosts will be looking for their first win since they beat the Nipissing Lakers 75-65 Nov. 16.
