Gryphon lacrosse men clout McMaster

GUELPH – Once the Guelph Gryphons found their scoring touch, there was no stopping them as they ran to a 17-3 victory over the McMaster Marauders in Canadian University Field Lacrosse Association play Sunday at the Gryphon Soccer Complex.

It took the Gryphs more than half of the first quarter to score their first goal of the game, but they quickly added four more to lead 5-1 by the end of the quarter. They extended the margin to 10-1 at halftime and 13-2 at the end of the third quarter.

Zachery Luis and Alec Simons each recorded hat tricks for the Gryphs while James Short scored twice. Single goals were added by Connor Watson, Josh Manangan, Jackson Nishimura, Mike Berger, Mitchell Ogilvie, Brandon Tanacs, Cohen Campbell, Grant Paterson and Gabriel Tomazela. Luis, Short, Watson, Ben Heidecker and Joshua Toguri each had one assist.

Mitchell Pellarin, Derrick Hastings and Yvon Bolduc scored the goals for McMaster while Pellarin also had an assist.

Dennis Semenovych collected the win in net for the Gryphs.

Michael Cox started and took the loss in net for McMaster. He allowed 11 goals before being replaced by Nolan Clayton with half an hour to play.

The Gryphs lead the West Division at 2-0 while the game was the season opener for McMaster.

The Gryphs are to host the Brock Badgers Sunday at 1 p.m. at the Gryphon Soccer Complex.
