Gryphon lacrosse men down Laurentian in season opener

SUDBURY – The Guelph Gryphons connected for seven goals in the second quarter as they opened their Canadian University Field Lacrosse Association season with a 16-12 victory over the Laurentian Voyageurs Saturday at Laurentian University Stadium.

The Gryphs had a 5-2 lead at the end of the first quarter and extended it to 12-5 at halftime. Laurentian chipped away at the gap in the second half, narrowing it to 14-8 by the end of the third quarter.

Zachery Luis hit for six goals for the Gryphons while Mike Berger netted four, Alec Simons had a hat trick, Quinn Stanhope scored twice and James Short added a single goal. Short had five assists while Simons had three and Berger, Jackson Nishimura and Mitchell Ogilvie added one apiece.

Matt Smith collected five goals for Laurentian while Michael Mayes and Patrick Fitzhenry scored twice each. Getting single goals were Mike Kussman, Adam Elinsky and Ty Mikulik. Mayes had two assists and Fitzhenry, Kussman and Elinsky had one each.

Dennis Semenovych picked up the win in the Guelph net while Jake Kelly was tagged with the loss in Laurentian’s net.

The Gryphs are to host the McMaster Marauders Sunday at 4 p.m. at the Gryphon Soccer Complex. The game will be the season opener for McMaster.
