Gryphon lacrosse men downed by Western

LONDON – The Guelph Gryphons suffered an 11-6 loss to the Western Mustangs in Canadian University Field Lacrosse Association play Friday night at Mustangs Field.

The Gryphs never led in the game as they trailed 2-1 at the end of the first quarter, 6-2 at halftime and 6-4 after the third quarter.

Zachery Luis had two goals and two assists for the Gryphs while single goals were added by Alec Simons, James Short, Mark Wilson and Quinn Stanhope. Single assists were awarded to Simons, Mike Berger and Mitchell Ogilvie.

Cody Ward connected for three goals and two assists to lead Western while Austin Haber also scored a hat trick. Nikolai Farrus tallied twice and Jonathan Tokiwa, Cole Davis and Tristan Simeoni each scored once. Getting one assist apiece were Michael Byrne, Patrick Gamble, Rowan Kelly and Gabriel Iozzo.

Hayden Walsh was charged with the loss in the Guelph net while Manraj Nijjar was the winning netminder for Western.

Western leads the West Division at 4-0 while the Gryphs and Toronto Varsity Blues are tied for third at 2-2. The Brock Badgers are second at 3-1.

The Gryphs and Varsity Blues are to tangle at the Gryphon Soccer Complex Thursday at 8 p.m.
