Gryphon lacrosse men drop Laurier in season opener

WATERLOO – Four goals in the first quarter sparked the Guelph Gryphons to a 9-1 victory over the Laurier Golden Hawks in their CUFLA season opener Sunday at Laurier’s University Stadium.

The Gryphs also held Laurier scoreless until early in the third quarter.

Guelph was up 4-0 at the end of the first quarter, 6-0 at halftime and 7-1 after the third quarter.

Max McPherson, Gavin Thibeault and Nick Nigro each had two goals for the Gryphs while single goals were added by Bryce Dennis, Jabe Verbeek and Liam Aston. McPherson and Thibeault each had two assists while Ben Doherty had one assist.

Thomas MacDonald scored for Laurier while Liam Foran set up the goal.

Cameron MacLeod had 12 saves in the Guelph net for the win while Andrew Moir had 14 saves for Laurier.

The Gryphs have two games on their schedule next weekend as they’re to play the Brock Badgers at Brock Saturday at 6 p.m. and host the McMaster Marauders Sunday at 1 p.m. at the Gryphon Soccer Complex.
