Gryphon lacrosse men end winless streak against Western
GUELPH – The Guelph Gryphons kept the Western Mustangs scoreless through the first half of Saturday’s CUFLA men’s lacrosse game on their way to a 10-4 victory at the Gryphon Soccer Complex.
The win was Guelph’s first over Western in league play since they took their 2013 season opener 7-6 over the Mustangs at the Gryphon Soccer Complex. Between the wins were 12 losses including one in overtime and another three by two goals or less.
Saturday, the Gryphs led 4-0 at the end of the first quarter, 7-0 at halftime and 8-2 after the third quarter.
James Short hit for a hat trick for the Gryphs while Connor Watson had a pair of goals. Getting one goal apiece were Mark Wilson, Thomas Whitty, Mitchell Ogilvie, Cohen Campbell and Matt Allen. Watson had two assists and Wilson and Mike Berger had one each.
Nikolai Farrus, Cody Ward, Tristan Simeoni and Evan Brisley scored the goals for Western while Farrus, Cole Davis, Pierson Noble and Julian Simeoni each had one assist.
Hayden Walsh had 14 saves in the Gryphon net to get the win while Western’s Ben Landers had seven saves.
The win leaves the Gryphs third in the West Division at 6-3 with one game to go in their regular season. Brock leads the division at 7-0 while Western’s at 7-2.
The Gryphs are to host the fourth-place Toronto Varsity Blues Sunday afternoon.
