Gryphon lacrosse men in Baggataway Cup final
NORTH BAY – The Guelph Gryphons pulled off a surprise at the Canadian University Field Lacrosse Association’s Baggataway Cup championship tournament Saturday as they knocked off the Trent Excalibur 13-10 in the semifinals.
The Gryphons had entered the tournament at Nipissing University seeded fourth and needed a win over the fifth-seeded host Lakers Friday night to get a Saturday date with the waiting Excalibur, the top seeds.

Three consecutive goals to end the opening half put the Gryphs ahead at the intermission. Guelph trailed 3-2 at the end of the first quarter, but led 7-5 at halftime and added another goal to the difference to be up by three (9-6) at the end of the third quarter.
The loss was the first of the season for Trent as the Excalibur had finished atop the Central Division at 6-0 while the Gryphs were second in the West at 4-2.
Thomas Whitty struck for four goals for the Gryphs while Michael Berger had three and Connor Watson added two.
Taite Cattoni led Trent with a four-goal outing while Dylan Munro had a hat trick and Dylan Hutchison collected a pair of goals.

The Gryphs advance to the championship game where they’ll face the Brock Badgers for the second time in two weeks. Brock secured top spot in the West, at 5-1, with an 18-6 win over the Gryphs at the Gryphon Soccer Complex Oct. 24.
The Badgers, seeded third in the tournament, defeated the sixth-seeded Queen’s Gaels Friday night in the quarterfinals and the second-seeded Bishop’s Gaiters in the semifinals Saturday night. Bishop’s had finished first in the East at 6-0.
Sunday’s championship match is to go at 2 p.m.
