The Gryphs jumped ahead early in the game, leading 3-1 at the end of the first quarter before the Badgers battled back to go up 7-4 by halftime.

However, the Gryphs didn’t fold and limited the Badgers to a pair of goals in the second half, both coming late in the fourth quarter.

Guelph cut the gap with two goals in the third quarter and added two more in the fourth quarter to shoot ahead 8-7 with eight minutes to play. Brock, though, tied it three minutes later, but the Gryphs went up again with 3:03 to go. The Badgers hit for the final goal of regulation time with 1:26 to go in the fourth quarter to force the overtime.

The winning goal came early in the overtime as Brock’s Mitchell Gustavsen won the opening faceoff and the Badgers moved the ball upfield to an open Aidan Buis who quickly fired home the winner.

Michael Berger led the Gryphs with five goals while Mitchell Ogilvie scored twice and single goals were added by Thomas Whitty and Mark Wilson.

Buis and Joshua Rex collected hat tricks for Brock while Jeffery Wittig added a pair of goals and Nathan Braniff and Boedy Shields scored once apiece.

The Gryphon trio of Berger (attack), Ogilvie (midfield) and Nolan Schott (defence) were named to the all-tournament team.

Brock had been seeded third for the tournament and the Gryphons were seeded fourth. The Badgers had finished the regular season atop the West Division at 5-1 while the Gryphs were second at 4-2.

Both had to play Baggataway Cup quarterfinal matches Friday, the Gryphs beating fifth-seed Nipissing Lakers 18-8 and Brock disposing of sixth-seed Queen’s Gaels 17-10.

Both also posted semifinal surprises Saturday, Guelph ousting the top-seeded Trent Excalibur 13-10 and Brock eliminating second-seeded Bishop’s Gaiters 10-7.

The Gryphs and Brock met twice in the regular season with the Badgers winning both matches – 10-8 at St. Catharines Oct. 3 and 18-6 at the Gryphon Soccer Complex Oct. 24.
