Gryphon lacrosse men out of Baggataway Cup play

PETERBOROUGH – The Guelph Gryphons saw their CUFLA men’s field lacrosse season come to an end Saturday when they were defeated 9-5 by the Brock Badgers in the Baggataway Cup championship tournament semifinals at Trent University’s Justin Chiu Stadium.

Semifinal losers are eliminated from the tournament as it doesn’t have a bronze-medal game.

For the defending champion Badgers the third time was the charm as they defeated the Gryphs for the first time this season after falling to them twice during the regular season.

The Gryphs never led Saturday as Brock scored the game’s first two goals and led 2-1 at the end of the first quarter, 5-2 at halftime and 7-4 after the third quarter.

Jabe Verbeek scored twice for the Gryphs while single goals were added by Bryce Dennis, Mitch Ogilvie and Gavin Thibeault. Jordan Ackie and Trent Gilbert each had an assist.

Sam Leclair and Andrew Rybka had hat tricks for Brock while the other goals were scored by Aidan Buis, Trent Hunter and James Gowland. Leclair, Buis, Hunter, Matthew Hertner, goalkeeper Connor O’Toole and Mitch Armstrong each had an assist.

Cam MacLeod was in net for the Gryphs.

Shots on net were not reported.

Brock is to play the host Trent Excalibur in Sunday’s championship game after the Excalibur dropped the McGill Redbirds 12-5 in Saturday’s other semifinal.
