Gryphon lacrosse men pull away from Laurentian

SUDBURY – The Guelph Gryphons shot ahead for good with a pair of goals in the final minute of the first half on their way to a 12-5 victory over the Laurentian Voyageurs in Canadian University Field Lacrosse Association Sunday at Laurentian University Stadium.

The teams were tied 2-2 at the end of the first period and 4-4 with a minute to go in the first half. The Gryphs were up 9-5 after the third quarter.

Paco Jones-Jewell and Mitchell Ogilvie each had hat tricks for the Gryphs while Mike Berger and Connor Watson scored twice each and Jonah Boehm and Nick Nigro added single goals. Thomas Whitty collected three assists while Jones-Jewell and Berger each had two assists and Ogilvie and Cole Cook each had one.

Ty Mikulik tallied twice for Laurentian while the other goals were scored by Joshua Dikeos, Matt Smith and Gavin Lang. Dikeos and Michael Mayes each had an assist.

Cameron MacLeod and Dennis Semenovych split time in the Guelph net. MacLeod started and allowed four goals in his half of the game while Semenovych allowed one during his stint.

Jake Kelly played the entire game in net for Laurentian.

The win lifts the Gryphs to 2-1 while Laurentian falls to 0-2.

The Gryphs are to play the McMaster Marauders at Hamilton Wednesday at 8:30 p.m. The game will be McMaster’s first of the season.
