Gryphon lacrosse men take national tournament qualifier
TORONTO – A pair of three-goal quarters sparked the Guelph Gryphons to a 7-4 victory over the Toronto Varsity Blues in Saturday’s Baggataway Cup national tournament qualifying game at Varsity Stadium.
The teams were tied 1-1 at the end of the first quarter before the Gryphs surged to a 4-2 lead at halftime. The host Blues narrowed the gap with the lone goal of the third quarter and they tied it with the first goals of the final quarter. However, the Gryphs responded with three consecutive goals for the win.
Mark Wilson had a four-goal game for the Gryphs while Noah Glass, Matthew Sykes and Cohen Campbell added single goals. James Short and Mitchell Ogilvie each had two assists while Glass had one.
Jason Barnable tallied twice for Toronto while Darren Elliott and Andrew Masson each scored once. Elliott, former Gryphon Brendan Vogan and Andy Berti each had one assist.
The Gryphs and Varsity Blues had finished the regular season tied for third in the West Division with 6-4 records. The Varsity Blues were awarded third place and the right to host the division’s Baggataway Cup qualifying game with a 6-5 win over the Gryphs last Sunday in the final regular-season game for both teams.
The Gryphs are to play the Trent Excalibur in a Baggataway Cup quarter-final in Montreal Friday at McGill’s Molson Stadium. Trent finished second in the East Division at 8-2.
