Gryphon lacrosse men thump Laurier

WATERLOO – The Guelph Gryphons erupted for 11 goals in the first half on their way to a 17-3 thumping of the Laurier Golden Hawks in CUFLA men’s lacrosse play Friday night at University Stadium.

The Gryphs scored twice in the first three and a half minutes and led 5-0 at the end of the first quarter, 11-1 at halftime and 14-2 after the third quarter.

James Short, Alec Simons and Quinn Stanhope each had hat tricks for Guelph while Zachery Luis and Noah Glass scored twice each and Mitchell Ogilvie, Mark Wilson, Mike Berger and Cohen Campbell each had single goals. Ogilvie had three assists while Luis, Wilson and Paco Jones-Jewell had two each and Short, Ben Heidecker, Matthew Sykes and Brandon Tanacs had one each.

Andy Borgatti scored all three goals for Laurier while Chris Van Ooteghem assisted on all three.

Dennis Semenovych was in net for the Gryphons for the win while Sam Stewart took the loss for Laurier.

The Gryphs (5-3) are tied for second in the West Division with the Brock Badgers (5-1) while Laurier (3-6) is fifth.

The Gryphs are to host the Laurentian Voyageurs (2-7) Sunday at 1 p.m. at the Gryphon Soccer Complex.
