
Gryphon lacrosse women split their home matches
GUELPH – The Guelph Gryphons wrapped up their OUA women’s lacrosse league’s regular season Sunday by splitting a pair of games at Varsity Field.
The Gryphs rallied from a goal down at halftime to drop the McMaster Marauders 9-4 in their morning game.
In the afternoon, the Gryphs were edged 13-12 by the Brock Badgers.
The games were Guelph’s only true home games of the season.
In other West Division games in Guelph Sunday, the Western Mustangs downed Brock 13-6 and Laurier Golden Hawks 13-2 and Laurier defeated McMaster 12-3.
Western finished atop the division at 8-0 while Laurier finished second at 6-2. The Gryphs and Brock each had 3-5 records and McMaster was at 0-8.
Queen’s Gaels lead the East Division at 6-0 and are followed by Toronto Varsity Blues at 4-3, Trent Excalibur at 3-4 and Ontario Tech Ridgebacks at 0-6. The division is to complete its regular season this week.
All nine teams in the league advance to its championship tournament in Oshawa Oct. 30-31.
Teams have been randomly selected into three-team pools for pool play Oct. 30. First-place finisher in each pool along with the second-place finisher with best record move on to the playoff round Oct. 31 that is to see semifinals and medal games (gold and bronze) contested.
The Gryphs are in a pool with Trent and Laurier while Western’s in a pool with the two winless teams, McMaster and Ontario Tech. The other pool consists of Queen’s, Toronto and Brock.
