Gryphon ringette women topped twice
GUELPH – The Guelph Gryphons suffered a pair of losses Friday in the Canadian University Challenge Cup ringette tournament at the Gryphon Centre.
The Gryphs wrapped up their first-round play in Tier One with a 5-3 loss to the Calgary Dinos. That game meant nothing for the Gryphs as they already knew they’d be relegated to Tier Two for the remainder of the tournament. The game did have seeding ramifications for Calgary.
Guelph started its Tier Two play with a 5-2 loss to the Laurier Golden Hawks Friday night.
The Gryphs are to play the Trent Excalibur Saturday at 11:15 a.m. on the complex’s Gold Rink in their final game of the second round of the tournament.
The six teams in Tier Two – Brock Badgers, McMaster Marauders Two and Nipissing Lakers are the others – will be seeded following the second round for the playoff round that is to start with the quarter-finals Saturday night. Top two teams get byes in the quarter-finals.
Tier Two semifinals are set for Sunday with games at the Victoria Road arena at 6:30 a.m. and Centennial arena at 7 a.m.
Saturday’s quarter-final losers are to play in a consolation match Sunday at 11 a.m. on the Gryphon Centre’s Red Rink. Sunday morning’s semifinal winners are to play in the Tier Two gold-medal match at 2:45 p.m. while the semifinal losers are to play in the bronze-medal match at 1:20 p.m. The medal games are to be played on the Gryphon Centre’s Gold Rink.
The Tier One medal matches are also to be played on the Gold Rink Sunday. The gold-medal game is set for 11:55 a.m. and the bronze-medal match is to go at 10:30 a.m.
The Carleton Ravens were the lone undefeated Tier One team after the opening round, but the Ravens were edged 5-4 by the Dalhousie Tigers in their first game of the second round.
That result combined with a 10-4 win by the Ottawa Gee-Gees over the Western Mustangs left Carleton, Dalhousie and Ottawa tied for first in Tier One with eight points apiece. Carleton and Ottawa are to play Saturday at 10 a.m. on the Gold Rink while Dalhousie and Western are to play on the Gold Rink at 7:30 a.m.
