Gryphon rugby men down Western Mustangs

GUELPH – The Guelph Gryphons struck for a pair of tries in the first nine minutes of the match as they downed the Western Mustangs 44-27 in OUA men’s rugby play Saturday in the Gryphon Rugby Day celebration at Varsity Field.

Despite Guelph’s fast start, Western battled back to cut the gap to a single point midway through the first half. However, the Gryphs turned on their offence again and pulled away to a 28-13 lead by halftime.

Max Goodwin connected for two tries for the Gryphs while Cameron Hurst, Mitchell Talbot, Aria Keshoofy, Kirk Addai Sarfo and Alexander Williamson collected one apiece. Scorers of kicking points were not available.

The win lifts the Gryphs to 2-0. They’re tied with the Brock Badgers for first in the West Division. Western is fifth at 0-2.

The Gryphs are to host the Queen’s Gaels (1-0) Friday at 7 p.m. at Varsity Field.
