Gryphon rugby men drop Brock to clinch first in division

GUELPH – The Guelph Gryphons secured a first-place finish in the OUA men’s rugby league’s West Division standings with a second-half surge Friday night at Varsity Field.

The Gryphs scored all 33 of the points scored in the second half as they downed the Brock Badgers 47-14 to complete their regular season.

The second-half onslaught also gave the Gryphs a bonus point for scoring four or more tries in the game. That point was Guelph’s fifth bonus point of the season.

The Gryphs finish with a 5-1 record and 25 points, one more point than the Waterloo Warriors (4-1) can achieve should they beat the Laurier Golden Hawks (2-3) Saturday.

The Gryphs would win a tie-breaker with Waterloo thanks to a 36-14 victory over the Warriors in their season opener at Waterloo Sept. 7.

By finishing first in the division the Gryphs get a bye in the league quarter-finals and will host a semifinal match Nov. 2 at Varsity Field.
