Gryphon rugby men drop Waterloo to start season

WATERLOO – The Guelph Gryphons opened their OUA men’s rugby season with a 36-14 victory over the Waterloo Warriors Saturday at the Columbia Icefield Fields.

The Gryphs struck for five tries in the match and they held Waterloo to two.

Scoring details were not reported.

The OUA league has been divided into two five-team divisions this season rather than one big 10-team division. Teams are to play each team in its own division once and get games against two teams in the other division which reduces the regular season for each team to six games from the eight played last year.

The Gryphs are in the West Division along with the Western Mustangs, Brock Badgers, Waterloo and Laurier Golden Hawks.

The East Division consists of the Queen’s Gaels, Trent Excalibur, McMaster Marauders, RMC Paladins and Toronto Varsity Blues.

The East Division opponents the Gryphs are to play in the regular season are Queen’s and Trent, the teams that would’ve finished 1-2 had the division existed last year.

The Gryphs are to host Western Saturday at 3:30 p.m. at Varsity Field in the second game of Guelph’s Gryphon Rugby Day. The Gryphon women are to play Queen’s at 1 p.m.
