Gryphon rugby men fall in battle of unbeaten squads

GUELPH – The Queen’s Gaels put an end to the defending champion Guelph Gryphons’ undefeated run in OUA men’s rugby play Saturday at the University of Guelph’s South Field as the visitors scored a 29-12 victory.

Both teams entered the game with undefeated 4-0 records.

Queen’s scored the first three tries of the game that pitted last year’s championship-game combatants against one another.

The visitors claimed a 24-5 lead before the break while the second half saw the teams score one try apiece with the Gryphs converting their try.

Collin Smibert and Jakob Schulz scored the tries for the Gryphs while Kobe Faust added a convert.

Liam Casey and Evan Curd each scored two tries for Queen’s while Dan Svoboda added the other try. James Webb kicked two converts.

Queen’s leads the league at 5-0 while the Gryphs, Waterloo Warriors and Western Mustangs are each at 4-1. The Laurier Golden Hawks and Brock Badgers are each at 3-2 and their followed by the McMaster Marauders and RMC Paladins at 1-4 and the Toronto Varsity Blues and Trent Excalibur at 0-5.

The Gryphs are to complete their regular season Saturday with a 4p.m. game at St. Catharines.
