Gryphon rugby men hit early, but drop match to Queen’s

GUELPH – The Guelph Gryphons scored a pair of penalty kicks in the first eight minutes of the game, but the Queen’s Gaels came charging back for a 40-13 victory in OUA men’s rugby play Friday night at Varsity Field.

After the Gryphs gained the early 6-0 lead, the Gaels rebounded to lead 26-6 at halftime.

The Gryphs scored first in the second half, too, as Jack Caylor’s try and Sheridan’s convert cut the gap to 26-13. However, Queen’s added two more tries later in the game to complete the scoring.

Dylan Young led the Gaels with a try and five converts while James MacDonald, Alex Pipchuk, Ruairidh MacPhail, Liam Casey and Nicholas DeLallo each had a try.

The Gryphs and Gaels have been the class of the league the past four seasons as they’ve met in the final each of those seasons. The Gryphs defeated the Gaels in penalty kicks to win the OUA title in 2016 while the Gaels defeated the Gryphs in the final the other three seasons – 2014, 2015 and 2017.

Friday’s result leaves Queen’s atop the OUA standings at 5-0, the league’s only undefeated team. The Gryphs are second at 4-1.

The Gryphs are to play the Brock Badgers (1-4) at St. Catharines Friday at 5 p.m.
