Gryphon rugby men run away with win in second half

GUELPH – A dominating performance in the second half powered the Guelph Gryphons to a 59-28 victory over the Trent Excalibur in OUA men’s rugby league play Friday night at Varsity Field.

While the Gryphs never trailed in the match, Trent kept it close for the first half as the hosts led 26-21 at the break.

However, the Gryphs struck for five consecutive tries in the second half before Trent completed the scoring with a try in the final minute.

Marcello Wainwright, Erich Milne and John Sheridan each had two tries for the Gryphs while Jack Gelbart, Alexander Chaffey and Jordan Hofstra scored one apiece. Cody Weese-Burton added four conversions and Mario Van der Westhuizen had three.

Emerson Prior scored two tries for Trent while Charles Oulton and Qais Nasseri added single tries and Fawad Nasseri converted all four.

With one game to go in their regular season, the Gryphs are second in the standings at 6-1. Queen’s Gaels lead at 6-0 and the Laurier Golden Hawks are third at 5-1.

Laurier is to host the Brock Badgers (1-5) Saturday at 1 p.m. and the Gryphs Oct. 20 at 1 p.m. to finish the regular season
