Gryphon rugby men trounce McMaster in opener

GUELPH – The Guelph Gryphons scored four tries in each half as they opened the OUA men’s rugby season with a 51-10 victory over the McMaster Marauders Monday at Varsity Field.

The Gryphs never trailed in the game, although it was scoreless until the hosts scored a try 15 minutes in and then added another one four minutes later.

The Marauders connected for a try five minutes after that, but Guelph got that back and added a penalty kick for a 24-7 at halftime.

The teams scored a penalty kick apiece early in the second half before the Gryphs struck for four consecutive tries to complete the scoring.

Marcello Wainwright and Alexander Williamson each had two tries for the Gryphs while Matthew Van Camp, Kolby Francis and Kyle Lagasca scored one apiece. Rudolph Van Der Westhuizen had two penalty kicks and three converts while Aria Keshoofy added two converts.

E.J. Berri had a try for McMaster while Mitchell Richardson collected a penalty kick and a convert.

In other first-week games in the league, the Queen’s Gaels dumped Waterloo Warriors 74-6, Brock Badgers blanked Toronto Varsity Blues 50-0 and Western Mustangs defeated RMC Paladins 36-10.

Next up for the Gryphs is a match against Western at Mustang Field Sunday at 3 p.m.
