Gryphon rugby women advance to national final

WOLFVILLE, N.S. – The Guelph Gryphons will play for gold Sunday at the U Sports national university women’s rugby championship tournament Sunday.

The fourth-seed Gryphs gained their berth in the championship game Friday when they edged the top-seed Ottawa Gee-Gees 15-12 in a rainy semifinal match.

The Gryphs scored three consecutive tries for the win, two of them coming in the first half and the third one early in the second half.

Emilie Nicholl, Brodie Schmidt and Amara Hill scored the unconverted tries for Guelph.

Emily Gray hit for both tries for Ottawa while Claire Gallagher had a conversion.

The Gryphs are to play second-seed St. Francis Xavier X-Women in the final. StFX downed sixth-seed Laval Rouge et Or 26-12 in the other semifinal.
